Blow, Ye Winds! Drive Safely in Windy Weather!
Drive Safely in Windy Weather Man, doesn’t summer already seem like it was so long ago? We’re already dipping our toes in weather patterns that suggest that snow tires might not be far behind and that the air is shifting from “crisp” to “frigid,” and outright bad weather might not be far behind. Of course, bad weather makes for tricky driving, and one of the most unpleasant weather situations is when it’s really windy. So, how do you drive safely in windy weather? Here are four tried-and-true tips, from your old pals at Speedcraft VW. Tip #1) Don’t Speed. We know, big words coming from a dealership called Speedcraft. But we mean this: when it’s extremely windy out, you already will have a difficult time reacting to changes in traffic and the like. Factor in extreme speed, and you’re asking for trouble. This is an artist's approximation of what the wind looks like. Tip #2) Don’t Follow Closely Behind Trailers. Really, it’s best practice not to follow closely behind any vehicle, ever. But when it’s windy, some people try to tuck in behind Semi trailers, thinking that the massive vehicles can block the wind. Never, ever do this. It’s dangerous. Also, don’t follow behind boats, or anything else on trailers. Tip #3) Minimize Your Distractions. Remember the old adage: Hands at ten-and-two. Don’t check your phone, don’t fiddle with the radio, don’t apply chapstick, don’t “Wave ‘Em Like You Just Don’t Care” even when the radio tells you to throw your hands in the air. Pay attention to task at hand, and keep your hands on the wheel. Tip #4) Consider Driving Your Most Aerodynamic Vehicle. Lots of drivers associate any sort of poor weather with driving an SUV, but in windy weather, it might be best to drive a more aerodynamic vehicle. While SUVs are more powerful, they are also typically more boxy and are affected more by high winds. So if you’ve got an aerodynamic car, drive ‘em if you’ve got ‘em. We hope that these tips will help to keep you and your vehicle safe when the winds start flaring up! However, we understand that accidents do sometimes happen, so if they do, we encourage you to visit our service department at Speedcraft VW. Drive safely out there!
It's Here, Folks: Get Your Car Ready for Fall!
Get Your Car Ready for Fall At Speedcraft VW, we love fall as much as the next guy (or girl). We love the changing leaves, the crisp air, and the pumpkins that seem to be popping up out of thin air. However, this also represents a time where our cars are susceptible to various ills, and where we need to take care to be sure that they’re ready for the oncoming winter. Here are five ways to get your car ready for fall,, from you old pals at Speedcraft VW. Check Your Lights and Batteries. Frequently, our battery posts will develop corrosion and metallic residue, which will sometimes give your car trouble starting or sap power from your car’s electrical functions. So, simply take a steel brush and wipe away any buildup, then reattach your battery fittings tightly. Then, check to make sure your headlights and taillights are working at full strength. If they look to be lacking, they may need replacing as well. Fall is here in Rhode Island. Are you ready for it? Change your Wiper Blades. When you enjoy summers like ours, there aren’t any drawbacks, right? Wrong. Constant heat and sunshine dries out the rubber surfaces on your vehicle, and this is most evident on your windshield wiper blades. They’ll dry out and crack, rendering them completely ineffective. And, since blades are relatively inexpensive, this is an easy fix you can do yourself. Replace your Air Filter. This is another fix that is commonly overlooked, even though its amazingly simple to do. A dirty air filter will cause a drop in your fuel efficiency, make its engine run rougher, and cause problems for your vehicle’s exhaust. Check your Spare Tire. We never think of our spare tire, on the whole, until it’s too late. However, heading into winter, this is something that it would be foolish to overlook. Just use a standard tire pressure gauge, and make sure that your spare is ready to go. Top Off Your Fluids. This is yet another easy maintenance issue that is seldom addressed. So make sure that your washer fluid is clean, your brake fluid is full, and that your engine coolant is at an appropriate level. Lord knows, heading into our winters, you don’t want to find yourself on the side of the road because you overlooked something so simple. Of course, there are also service issues that you can’t do yourself, and that’s where Speedcraft VW comes in. So, if you’re in need of service or maintenance heading into the fall and winter months, schedule it with us!
D'oh! A Deer!
How to Avoid Hitting a Deer You’re driving down the road, minding your own business. You take a second to adjust the radio, settling for the station that plays entirely too much John Mellencamp. Next thing you know...boom. A deer has sauntered into the roadway, interrupting your stress-free cruise while causing no small amount of damage to your Volkswagen. While hitting a deer is often unavoidable, there are certain factors to consider that might make these incidents less frequent. So, from your buddies at Speedcraft VW, here are a few tips to help avoid hitting a deer. Tip #1: Think like a deer. When we run into a deer, our thoughts are generally all the same: “That stupid %@#&ing deer.” However, a deer relies on instinct, and certain variables frequently lead it into a losing collision course with your car. It generally is on the move most often during mating season--from September to December--at the hours near sunrise and sunset. They also prefer areas with edible foliage, ample places for shelter, and ponds and creeks to drink from. If you’re driving in one of these areas, look out. This is probably the last photo this deer ever took. Tip #2: Keep your eyes moving. If you’re driving on a remote road, you probably know that the ditches are loaded with potential day-ruiners. Thankfully, God believes in fair play, so he gave deer a surface on their eyes that reflects light. When you see two yellowish green dots in the ditch, those dots often make their way toward the road. And, since deer rarely travel alone, they’ve probably brought some friends along. Tip #3: Use your headlights to your advantage. When you’re on a country road with few other cars, wondering why this station plays so much John Mellencamp, use your highbeams whenever possible. And, when you happen upon a herd of deer, alert other drivers of the potential hazard with a simple flicker of your highbeams. They’ll often do the same. Tip #4: Don’t lose your cool. So far, we’ve touched only on tips to avoid hitting a deer. However, sometimes a collision is unavoidable. In these cases, don’t panic. Don’t swerve into the ditch or oncoming traffic, simply brake and honk your horn. If you’re choosing between swerving or hitting the animal, well, the deer is gonna get it. When these accidents happen--which, to be sure, we hope that they don’t--you’ll likely need some attention to your vehicle, which is where Speedcraft VW comes in. Our friendly service department will work quickly to return you to the road in no time, easing your stressload by fixing your car the right way, the first time. Live Long and Prosper: Tips to Extend Engine Life
Tips to Extend Engine Life Without playing favorites, one of our favorite events within the ranks at the Speedcraft Volkawagen Service Department has to be when an older VW model comes in, still running like a champ after 200,000 or 250,000 models. ( Note: Another favorite? When customers bring in a VW Thing.) But despite the regularity of seeing well-travelled VW vehicles, this sort of lifespan doesn’t happen by accident. There are a number of ways to help extend engine life in your vehicle, and we at Speedcraft VW are far too generous to keep them to ourselves. Tip #1: Break her in easy. We understand the temptation, but believe us when we tell you that vehicles require a little stretching before they endure top performance. For the first thousand or so miles, essential engine parts such as piston rings are still working themselves into shape. In those early driving sessions, give your VW a good runabout at various speeds and RPM levels to help work out any growing pains. Tip #2: Warm your car up when its cold. It happens to every one of us, where you’re late for work or a dinner reservation and just want to get in and go. However, even five minutes of idling will help boost oil viscosity and allow gasoline to burn more effectively. A few extra minute in extreme cold will add untold miles further down the road. How many miles do you suppose this Beetle can handle? 150,000? 200,000? More?! Tip #3: Drive the speed limit. We aren’t fun-hating, we promise. After all, we have “speed” right there in the name of our dealership. But regular high-speed driving makes pistons and engine parts work overtime, and puts undue stress on all parts of your vehicle. Avoid the lead foot whenever possible, for the sake of your engine. Tip #4: Eliminate excess weight. You’d be shocked how frequently we see vehicles that are weighed down by an old weight set for no good reason whatsoever. Excess cargo, old boxes, sandbags left over from the winter--it all puts more work on your engine, work that it doesn’t need. Put those old weights in the shed, for Pete’s sake. Tip #5: Make a maintenance schedule. A no-brainer, right? With regular scheduled maintenance to replenish necessary fluids and analyze often-overlooked mechanical systems, your vehicle will get the most out of every available mile. Our service department will happily assist with the creation of a maintenance schedule, which will add extra years and boosted confidence in your VW vehicle. Take advantage of Speedcraft Volkswagen's Oil Change Program. Sounds easy enough, right? For any additional information regarding engine life, or to simply schedule a visit with our friendly service staff, feel free to pay a visit to Speedcraft VW, located a short drive from Providence and Newport!

Avoid Costly Service with a Wheel Alignment Check at Speedcraft VW
Wheel Alignment Check Providence RI Maintaining proper wheel alignment helps to avoid all types of vehicle issues. Of all potential vehicle maintenance issues, perhaps the easiest to overlook is wheel alignment. We typically consider our tires only in the most basic sense--that is, that if we keep them properly inflated, then we are doing our part to ensure their sustained health. At Speedcraft VW, we’ve come to realize that the opposite is true. Maintaining proper wheel alignment helps to mitigate a great number of potential costs, and the reasons for having your alignment checked are numerous. You’ll save fuel. Your tires are designed to run flat upon the road surface, but when the alignment is off, this is not the case. The result is that the tires aren’t running on the surface they were intended to, thus increasing the resistance from the road surface and causing uneven friction on your tires. All of these competing forces make your tires work harder to move forward, and that extra work means higher fuel consumption. It’s terrible for your tires. The uneven wear caused by poor alignment results in your tires becoming worn more quickly on one side than the other. This greatly limits the overall length of your tires, and causes a rougher ride in the meantime. Perhaps most importantly, however, is the fact that under most warranty conditions, damage to tires from maintenance issues (read: poor alignment) is almost never covered. It isn’t a manufacturing discount, it’s a maintenance issue. That one’s on you, pal. Improper wheel alignment causes uneven wear on your tires. It’s just safer. If you’ve ever been driving and felt your vehicle pull to one side or the other, this is generally due to faulty wheel alignment. It also becomes even more difficult to drive in poor conditions such as rain or winter weather, when steering can already be taxing. A little attention to maintaining alignment can greatly improve the overall safety of car travel. It makes your car work harder than it needs to. The strain caused by poor alignment isn’t limited superficial tire damage. Uneven tires can negatively affect your power steering system. They can cause extensive damage to your car’s suspension, which is made up of complicated and specifically calibrated parts. It can even hurt your brake system, and the brake shaft in particular. At Speedcraft VW near Providence, RI, we feature a full-service automotive department who can quickly and accurately diagnose any alignment issues you might be having, many of which can go undiagnosed until it’s too late. We also feature a variety of available service specials, including those involving alignment and tire service. We look forward to seeing you soon at Speedcraft VW, where we’ll get your alignment issues quickly managed to return you to the road as soon as possible.
Five Common Signs You Might Need a Tune-Up
Stay off the side of the road this summer with these signs you might need a tune-up. Vehicle Tune-Up Providence RI When the spring and summer months hit, it isn’t uncommon to notice a change in your vehicle’s overall performance. The pounding your vehicle takes during the winter will frequently have a clear negative effect on the overall health of your car, and at Speedcraft VW near Providence, RI, we’d like to help you catch some of these problems before they become more than a nuisance. Here are five signs that it might be time for a tune up, just in time for the summer driving season. 1) You notice a large drop in your fuel efficiency. Are you having to fill your gas tank more often? If so, don’t overlook it. You might possibly have a problem with your fuel injector, your spark plugs might be dirty or failing, or you could have a dirty fuel filter. 2) You’ve experienced tough starts or stalls. This could be indicative of a number of problems, including dirty intake valves, timing issues, or general fuel injection problems. Be certain to note the circumstances of hesitant starts or stalls to assist your mechanic in rooting out the problem. Scheduling service in advance will keep all of your vehicle's systems running smoothly. 3) What is that noise? No knocking, pinging or squealing noises should be ignored, and can indicate a large list of potential issues. Squealing when you turn the steering wheel may reflect low steering fluids or possible leaks, when knocks can indicate low oil, loose rod bearings or potentially larger engine problems. 4) Your brakes are less responsive than usual. Does it seem like you’re pressing harder on the brake than you usually have to? This could indicate low brake fluid, or potentially could signal that it’s the time for new brake pads. 5) Your car jerks when you shift. If your vehicle fights you when shifting from park into drive, this may be a sign of several problems. It could be something simple, like a new transmission filter and fluid. It could also be an indicator of a larger problem, which should only be checked out by professionals. At Speedcraft VW near Providence, RI, we proudly feature a full service auto garage, and our staff is ready and qualified to fix all your potential automotive issues before they rear their ugly heads to ruin your day. Additionally, we regularly feature assorted service specials, and will even work with you to create a maintenance schedule to keep your vehicle running its best. For any and all service on your vehicle in southern Rhode Island, visit our dealership in Wakefield today!
Trust Speedcraft VW for your Easy-to-Keep Maintenance Schedule
Easy-to-Keep Maintenance Schedule Providence RI There isn't a good time to have your car break down. Trust Speedcraft VW to solve problems before they ruin your day. Okay, here’s a trick question: When is the best time to have maintenance performed on your car? The likely answer for most people, unfortunately, is usually, “When it breaks down.” Too many among us take this devil-may-care attitude toward vehicle maintenance, and the resulting fallout can be heightened vehicle costs, greater inconvenience, and raised risk for accidents and breakdowns. At Speedcraft VW near Providence, RI, however, we recommend regularly scheduled service, and will even work with New England drivers to form an easy-to-keep maintenance schedule to keep their vehicles performing at a high level for many years to come. The need to adhere to a predefined schedule when it comes to your vehicle is less difficult than it sounds. Depending on the age and previous history of your vehicle, a planned schedule is simple to create and extremely helpful as it relates to the long-term health of your vehicle. The most effective format for planning vehicle maintenance for many drivers is to schedule fixes and inspections around their oil changes, because it serves as a fairly regular milestone for having your vehicle in front of a service professional. If you have your oil changed at every 5,000 miles (as is recommended in most newer vehicles), this will neatly fit into a regular maintenance visit, depending on a driver’s habits, of roughly every three months. As part of the Oil Maintenance Plan at Speedcraft VW near Providence, RI, the included multi-point inspection will help to identify any problems that may be slowly arising in the life of your vehicle. At Speedcraft VW, we work with you to set up a maintenance schedule that will keep your vehicle's systems regularly updated. Further inspections and procedures should be performed on a regular basis, and can be incorporated into any maintenance schedule that is drawn up at Speedcraft VW. For example, it is recommended that a battery cleaning and windshield wiper replacement are performed every six months, while more significant maintenance procedures such as a radiator flush, new spark plugs and fuel filter, and brake pad replacement should be performed yearly. Again, these can be easily added to any scheduled maintenance at Speedcraft VW. The main goal of keeping a firm service schedule is to keep your vehicle performing properly for as long as possible, and at Speedcraft VW, we believe that early action and regular thorough inspections are the best way to achieve this. And, as the top-rated Volkswagen dealership in New England, or reputation speaks for itself. To learn more about scheduled maintenance, or to enroll in the Oil Maintenance Plan, contact the friendly staff at Speedcraft VW today.
Time for an Oil Change? Here's How to Know for Sure
Signs You Need an Oil Change Providence RI Regular oil changes ensure that your vehicle runs properly and helps to eliminate future service costs. At risk of sounding overly dramatic, your vehicle’s oil can be pretty easily compared to the blood in your body. Both ensure that everything runs smoothly in their respective “bodies,” and the introduction of foreign elements in either can greatly limit the efficiency of their performance. At Speedcraft VW near Providence, RI, we go to great lengths to ensure that area vehicles run as efficiently as possible, and much of that efficiency is the direct result of maintaining an oil change schedule; to that end, we even have an Oil Maintenance Plan, which helps residents of the Providence area stay up-to-date with the health of their vehicle. But what are the visible signs you need an oil change? First, the most obvious: when you check your oil dipstick, if the oil level is on the lower end of the low-to-full spectrum, obviously it means--duh--your engine is low on oil. But it doesn’t mean you can merely toss a quart in the tank and continue on your merry way. The reason you are showing a low amount of oil frequently indicates that the oil is losing its effectiveness, and is thus being used more quickly. When checking your oil, also try to get a look at the consistency of the oil. When you add oil, the color looks roughly about as dark as beer. After it’s been in the engine for a few weeks, it will turn black. But once you start to see little particles in the black oil, you are seeing contamination, and it’s time to change your oil. Performance-wise, your engine will also let you know when it’s time to head to Speedcraft VW to get an oil change. It may be running louder than usual, the result of reduced lubrication from your motor oil. You may also see “Check Engine” lights, or oil indicators in newer cars. Dirty motor oil can cause engine parts to rub and grind, which can cause long-term damage. To make the oil-change process as simple as possible, Speedcraft VW now features the Oil Maintenance Plan, which helps keep your maintenance costs down and your vehicle on the road by providing it with regular oil maintenance. For just $199, enrollees receive five full synthetic oil changes, ten tire rotations, a multi-point safety inspection with each visit, and a hand wash and vac with each visit. Without even considering all the extra fixes you’ll be avoiding by regularly having your Volkswagen serviced, those who join the Oil Maintenance Plan also save $300 off the regular price of the provided services. There isn’t a more vital service--or a more simple one, for that matter--that your Volkswagen needs than a regular oil change. To schedule your oil change today, or to learn more about the Oil Maintenance Plan, call or visit Speedcraft VW in the Providence area, the top-rated Volkswagen dealership in New England.
