To decide on a winner, Cars.com compiled a team of car experts to take the nine best-selling midsize sedans out on a 220-mile road course. On this drive, each model was evaluated based on its major features like on-road handling and trunk space. Making the grade In order to qualify for the Best Midsize Sedan category, each model needed to offer an automatic transmission, cost a maximum of $28,000 and offer at least a combined EPA rating of 28 mpg. For the purpose of this evaluation, Cars.com looked at the 2016 Volkswagen Passat SE, which scored well both with the professional testers and real-word shoppers in terms of performance, tech, design and interior quality.
