What’s the difference between the SportWagen and the new Alltrack?

Just looking at the 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen and the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack, many drivers may have difficulties pinpointing the differences between these models. While they may be subtle at a glance, there are definitely some distinct differences between these compact wagons that are worth noting for those trying to decide between the two.

First introduced back in 2015, the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen has seen major success between families and commuters alike. But where the SportWagen falls short is where the all-new 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack picks it up. Designed to appeal to those looking for a more rugged driving experience, the biggest selling point of the Alltrack is its off-road driving capabilities.

That’s right, behind the wheel of the new VW Alltrack, drivers aren’t limited to city streets and highways. This impressive model features the must-have 4Motion All-Wheel Drive system which is able to send up to 50 percent of its drive torque to the back wheels when it detects a loss in traction.While this feature is available for the SportWagen, drivers have to upgrade in order to get it. The Alltrack, on the other hand, offers it as a standard.

If you look closely at the two models, you’ll also notice that the 2017 Alltrack offers a ground clearance 1 inch higher than the SportWagen. This goes along with the model’s added Off-Road Mode that we mentioned earlier. A part of the model’s Driving Mode Selector, the Alltrack is able to use its Off-Road Mode which features hill descent control and better traction control on loose and other off-road terrain.

Design Differences

Though the exteriors of the two models are undeniably similar, there are a few things that have been added to the Alltrack to set it apart from its SportWagen twin. This includes new body cladding, which offers an extra protective layer of metal to its exterior to prevent scratches and other damage in high-wear areas.

Another big change made to the Alltrack is its new front grille. While the SportWagen features a front grille similar to that of the other Golf family members, the Alltrack instead has a unique honeycomb grille, giving it its own distinct look to match its distinct performance.
