6 Winter Driving Tips from a Pro

As the cold weather months arrive in Rhode Island, it's time to prepare your Volkswagen for the challenging conditions ahead. Who better to get advice from than a professional driver?

Tanner Foust, a pro racing and stunt driver for Volkswagen, has a simple but crucial piece of wisdom for every VW owner: “Respect the conditions.”

Foust knows a thing or two about navigating slippery roads. As a three-time U.S. Rallycross champion, two-time Formula Drift winner, and a former ice driving instructor, he has mastered the art of car control.

Here are Tanner’s six essential tips for driving your Volkswagen safely this winter.

1. Let Your VW's Technology Help You

Modern Volkswagen vehicles are packed with technology designed to assist you in tricky situations. Foust emphasizes that if you drive within your car's limits and avoid taking turns too fast, these systems can be a great help.

"Traction control is part of the Electronic Stability Control system in every modern Volkswagen," he says. "If a tire starts to slip, the system automatically limits power to that tire to keep it gripping the road."

While this technology is beneficial in both front-wheel-drive and 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive models, Foust notes that 4MOTION® provides an extra edge. "That makes it a lot easier to get up that snowy road on the hill to grandma’s house," he adds, highlighting its superior low-speed acceleration on inclines.

2. Equip Your Car with the Right Tires

If you live in an area where temperatures frequently drop below 45 degrees, investing in winter tires is a smart move. Foust explains that winter tires give you "an advantage for braking, accelerating and steering whenever you’re on a snow-covered road."

Don't forget to check your tire pressure regularly. As temperatures fall, so does tire pressure, so ensure it's at the recommended level for your vehicle.

3. Focus on One Action at a Time

"A car can either brake, turn or accelerate," Foust says. "When driving on a snow-covered road...it’s critical that you do only one of those things at a time."

Trying to do more than one at once can overwhelm the tires' grip and lead to a skid. His advice is to brake in a straight line, ease off the pedals while turning, and only accelerate once the wheel is nearly straight again.

4. Understand and Avoid Skids

Skids happen when tires lose their grip on the road during a turn. Foust identifies two main types:

  • Oversteer: The rear tires slide to the outside of the turn.
  • Understeer: The front tires slide to the outside of the turn.

The best way to prevent either? Slow down and complete your braking before you enter the turn.

5. Leave Extra Room for Braking

On snowy roads, your braking distance can be up to four times longer than on dry pavement. This means your following distance should also be at least four times longer.

Every modern Volkswagen comes with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). In an emergency, Foust advises to "just push the brake hard." That buzzing feeling you feel is the ABS working to help you stop safely.

6. Be Prepared for the Unexpected

It's always wise to plan ahead, especially for winter drives where weather can change quickly. Foust recommends keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle with items like non-perishable food, water, and warm clothing. A Roadside Assistance Kit and First Aid Kit are also essential. "This way," he says, "you’ll be better prepared to weather the storm until help arrives."

Before the winter season gets into full swing, don't forget to schedule a cold-weather service appointment with our team at Speedcraft Volkswagen. We'll ensure your VW is ready to handle whatever the Rhode Island winter throws its way.

Transport Your Christmas Tree in a Volkswagen

Transport Your Christmas Tree in a Volkswagen

The holiday season is here, and for many in Rhode Island, that means finding the perfect tree to fill your home with that classic holiday scent and cozy atmosphere. But let's be honest, getting that tree from the farm to your living room can be a hassle. What if we told you it doesn't have to be? At Speedcraft Volkswagen, we've put together a few tips to make transporting your tree in your VW SUV easier and less stressful. Holidays are for spending time with family, not wrestling a tree into your car. Whether you prefer strapping the tree to your car’s rooftop or using the generous interior cargo space, follow these quick steps to get your tree home easily and securely this holiday season. Step 1: Prep Your VW SUV and Supplies Before you head out, a little preparation goes a long way. To protect your vehicle and yourself, make sure to gather: Blankets or tarps: To catch any loose pine needles, dirt, or sap. Ratcheting straps or strong rope: Avoid bungee cords, as they can stretch and loosen during transit. Utility gloves: To protect your hands from sticky sap and sharp needles. Reflective flags or tape: Essential for visibility if you’re driving after dark. Step 2: Measure Everything Twice There's nothing worse than getting the perfect tree home only to find it doesn't fit. Before you leave, measure the space in your home where the tree will go. Then, measure your vehicle's cargo space or roof rack to ensure you can transport it safely. Step 3: Loading Your Tree You’ve found "the one!" Now, it's time to get it home. Most tree farms will have netting available to wrap your tree tightly, which limits loose branches and prevents scratches. If not, use an old blanket or tarp. Transporting Inside Your SUV: Fold down the rear seats to maximize cargo space. For smaller items, use the underfloor storage in models like the ID.4 EV. Lay down your blanket or tarp to protect the interior. Load the tree with the trunk-end first, pushing it as far forward as possible to prevent sliding. Secure the tree using your vehicle’s interior anchor points with ropes or straps. Transporting on Your SUV's Rooftop: If your VW is equipped with crossbars, they provide a secure base and protect your roof's paint. Position the tree with the trunk facing the front of the vehicle. This reduces wind resistance and protects the branches from damage. Use strong ratcheting straps or durable ropes to fasten the tree securely to the crossbars. Step 4: The Pre-Drive Safety Check Before you pull out of the lot, double-check your work. On the rooftop? Give the tree a firm tug to ensure it’s secure. If it moves, tighten the straps until it’s solid. Inside the car? Make sure your view from the front windshield, rear window, and mirrors is not obstructed. If you're driving at night with the tree on the roof, attach a reflective flag or tape to the end of the tree to make it visible to other drivers. Step 5: Quick and Easy Cleanup Once you’re home and have unloaded your tree, the blankets you laid down should make cleanup simple. Quickly check for any stray sap spots and clean them immediately to avoid stains. With these tips, your Volkswagen SUV is the perfect partner for your holiday traditions. Long Trip Tips for Volkswagen ID.4 Drivers

The American road trip is a symbol of freedom and exploration, etched deeply into our culture. But with the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), road tripping comes with a new set of opportunities and considerations. The Volkswagen ID.4, Volkswagen's first globally available all-electric SUV, is a game-changer in this space. More than just a commuter vehicle, the ID.4 proves that EVs are not only practical for daily drives but also enjoyable for long-distance adventures. If you're transitioning to electric mobility and love the open road, the Volkswagen ID.4 has everything you need to make your road trips more memorable, comfortable, and efficient—with a little smart planning. Unleashing Real-World Range Before hitting the highway, it’s important to understand the ID.4’s range. Depending on your battery and drivetrain configuration, the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 offers up to 291 miles of EPA-estimated range with its larger 82 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive. Opting for all-wheel drive adds traction and performance but adjusts the range slightly to approximately 263 miles. However, real-world variables like speed, elevation, climate control, and cargo load can affect these numbers. For the most seamless trip experience, plan with a 10–15% buffer below the EPA rating, especially in regions with hilly terrain or colder temperatures. Charge Fast, Travel Far One of the ID.4’s standout features for long-haul journeys is its compatibility with DC fast charging at speeds of up to 170 kW. This means you can recharge from 10% to 80% in roughly 30 minutes on an 82 kWh model. Road trip coffee breaks have never been more productive! Volkswagen sweetens the deal with three years of unlimited Electrify America DC fast charging for new ID.4 owners. Find Electrify America locations easily along major interstates or metro corridors and leverage the Plug&Charge feature for seamless payment and authentication. Say goodbye to fumbling with apps and credit cards mid-trip. Smart Navigation with the Built-In Route Planner The ID.4's built-in EV-optimized route planner makes long-distance travel a breeze. The system dynamically adjusts your route based on traffic, elevation changes, and range, suggesting charging stops along the way. With real-time updates and accurate predictions, you’ll avoid unexpected detours and guesswork, freeing you to enjoy the open road. Gone are the days of juggling third-party apps to coordinate charging. The ID.4's infotainment system ensures you're always prepared, making EV road trips feel as convenient as gas-powered adventures. Comfort for the Long Haul Road trips aren’t just about the destination; they’re about the ride. The ID.4 prioritizes driver and passenger comfort for the longest stints. From spacious front and rear seating to a flat rear floor, the design is intentional, offering unparalleled comfort for hours on the road. Premium features like heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and an available panoramic fixed-glass roof elevate the experience. Rear passengers enjoy generous legroom and reclining seats, perfect for relaxing during extended drives. Need to cool the cabin in summer? Pre-condition the temperature through the MyVW app while the car is still plugged in, maximizing both comfort and battery range. Pack Like a Pro The Volkswagen ID.4 is built to carry everything you need for your adventure. With 64.2 cubic feet of cargo space (rear seats folded down) and 30.3 cubic feet with them upright, there’s ample room for luggage, camping gear—even a pair of folding bikes. While the ID.4 doesn’t feature a front trunk (frunk), its rear underfloor storage is perfect for stashing charging cables, tools, and supplies. Need even more space? Roof rails accommodate cargo boxes or bike racks with ease, though bear in mind that additional roof loads can slightly impact range at highway speeds. Adapt to Every Road Condition Tailor your ID.4 for different terrains and driving styles using its range of driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, and Sport. On longer stretches, Eco mode optimizes battery efficiency by adjusting throttle response and minimizing energy use from climate settings. Regenerative braking further enhances efficiency, especially in B mode, where the ID.4 slows aggressively when you lift off the accelerator. Whether you’re navigating steep descents or stop-and-go city traffic, this system ensures energy is recovered efficiently while enhancing control. Stress-Free Driving with IQ.DRIVE Long drives can be tiring, but Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite makes extended trips more enjoyable. Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Keeping Assist, and Travel Assist offer a semi-autonomous driving experience. Travel Assist is a standout feature, particularly on highways, where it manages speed, lane centering, and traffic-based acceleration or braking. It’s like having a co-pilot that reduces fatigue and keeps you focused on the big picture. Go Electric, Redefine the Road Trip Road trips in electric vehicles are a unique, enjoyable experience, and the Volkswagen ID.4 is the perfect companion for your next adventure. With its impressive range, seamless charging, spacious comfort, and advanced driving technologies, it offers everything you need to hit the road with confidence. Why settle for the ordinary when you can experience the extraordinary? Visit Speedcraft Volkswagen today and explore the possibilities of the Volkswagen ID.4. Safely Jump Start Your Volkswagen

How to Safely Jump Start Your Volkswagen

Knowing how to jump-start your car can be an essential skill for any driver, and this is particularly true for Volkswagen owners. Jump-starting a car can come to the rescue when a battery loses its charge, and having clear instructions to do so can mean the difference between a stranded car and a successfully running vehicle. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of jump-starting your Volkswagen, ensuring that you can perform this task with both safety and efficiency. Introduction Jump-starting a vehicle requires a basic understanding of electrical circuits and connections, but don’t worry – you don’t need to be a car enthusiast to master this task. What you do need is a clear understanding of the steps involved and a commitment to safety. Preparation Before you even touch the jumper cables, it’s crucial to prepare for the jump-starting process. This preparation involves not only gathering the required tools but also focusing on safety – both of the vehicle and the individuals involved in the process. Safety Precautions Work in a well-ventilated area away from any flammable substances. Wear protective gloves and eye protection to shield you from any accidental spills and splatters. Make sure the vehicle is in "Park", with the ignition off. Ensure that both vehicles are not touching and in neutral with the parking brake engaged. Required Tools and Equipment Jumper cables are the primary tool for jump-starting a car. Be sure yours are durable and in good condition, with fully functional clamps. You will also need another car with a fully charged battery to provide the jump. Step-by-Step Guide 1. Locate Battery Terminals in the Volkswagen Locating the battery in your Volkswagen is the first step, and this may vary depending on the Volkswagen model. The battery is typically found under the hood, sometimes shielded by a plastic cover that can be removed. 2. Park the Cars in a Safe and Correct Position Position the booster car so that the batteries are as close as possible, without touching, but do not allow the vehicles to touch. Ensure both cars are in "Park" and the ignition is off. Position the other car in a way that the cables will be able to reach the battery terminals from the Volkswagen. 3. Connect the Jumper Cables Connect one red (positive) jumper cable clamp to the positive (+) terminal on the booster car’s battery. Connect the other red (positive) jumper cable clamp to the positive (+) terminal on the Volkswagen's battery. Connect one black (negative) jumper cable clamp to the negative (-) terminal on the booster car’s battery. Connect the other black (negative) jumper cable clamp to an unpainted metal surface in the Volkswagen's engine bay, away from the battery but not near moving parts. 4. Start the Working Vehicle and Allow It to Run Start the booster car and allow it to run for a few minutes. This will charge the battery in the car that needs a jump. 5. Start the Volkswagen and Let It Run After a few minutes, start your Volkswagen. If it doesn’t start right away, turn off both cars and check the connections. If everything is secure, try starting again. 6. Disconnect the Cables in the Correct Order Once your Volkswagen has been jump-started, it’s time to disconnect the cables. Do so in the reverse order of how you connected them: Remove the black (negative) cable from the unpainted metal surface in the engine bay of the Volkswagen. Remove the black (negative) cable from the booster car’s battery terminal. Remove the red (positive) cable from the Volkswagen's battery terminal. Lastly, remove the red (positive) cable from the booster car’s battery terminal. Safety Tips Jump-starting a car can be dangerous if not done properly. Keep these tips in mind: Caution on Handling Batteries and Electrical Components Never touch both battery terminals simultaneously with one tool. Always handle batteries with caution, as they can leak and emit explosive gases. Avoid Short Circuits Take care for the clamps of the jumper cables to not touch each other during the process. Short-circuits can cause sparks, which can lead to serious injury. Disposing of Old Batteries Old car batteries should be properly disposed of. They contain lead and acid, which can be harmful to the environment. How to safely jump star my Volkswagen Jump-starting your Volkswagen requires careful attention to detail and respect for the vehicle's electrical systems. Remember, while this guide is here to help you in an emergency, regular maintenance of your car’s battery is the best way to prevent needing a jump start. Always check your battery's health and consider replacing it if it's older or showing signs of wear. Being prepared and maintaining your vehicle can save you time and hassle down the road.
